  6.    INTERNET SURVEY REACHES 3.8 MILLION INTERNET HOST LEVEL
  7.            3RD QUARTER 1994 GROWTH IS 21 PERCENT

  9. --Reston VA, USA.  The latest results from the Internet's most basic
  10. and longest continuing measurement of it's size were just released
  11. by Mark Lottor of Network Wizards of Menlo Park CA USA.  The Domain
  12. Survey attempts to discover every host on the Internet by doing a
  13. complete search of the Domain Name System.  The latest results were
  14. gathered during late October 1994.  The data is available in the zone
  15. directory on ftp.nw.com, or http://www.nw.com.

  17. The Internet is a very complex, dynamic, distributed aggregation
  18. of more than 45 thousand autonomous networks.  It defies definitive
  19. measurement.  Nonetheless, these values consitute prima facie
  20. connected host computers, even if many might not always be reachable.
  21. They are also extremely valuable for relative comparisons.

  23. Newsworthy, strategic highlights of the most current values include:
  24.  
  25. o a 3rd Quarter 1994 overall growth of 21 percent.  This represents an
  26.   even steeper growth than the norm over the past four years.  As a
  27.   result, the projected point at which the number of Internet hosts
  28.   will hit 100 million is now 1st quarter 1999 - based on the average
  29.   growth over the past four years.

  31. o the .com (commercial) domain is now the largest, and grew by a
  32.   striking 36 percent during the quarter to 1,054,422 hosts
  33.  
  34. o the .net (network) domain which is heavily used by many public
  35.   data internet service providers for their customers, grew by
  36.   66 percent during the quarter.
